Program Description
The University of Minnesota announces its 2018-2019 Fellowship Program in Neuromodulation. Fellowships are funded by the Discoveries and treatments for brain conditions core area of the MnDRIVE (Minnesota Discovery, Research and InnoVation Economy) initiative. Fellowships will be awarded to outstanding graduate (doctoral) students, postdoctoral trainees and residents/clinical fellows pursuing basic, translational or clinical research in neuromodulation.
Neuromodulation is an emerging transdisciplinary field focused on treating neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders with technological interventions at the neural interface that are non-destructive, reversible, and adjustable. Neuromodulation research integrates basic science, engineering, and clinical disciplines to yield new insights into brain function and develop therapeutic innovations that include electrical, magnetic, optogenetic, and ultrasound technologies.
MnDRIVE
MnDRIVE is a landmark partnership between the University and the state of Minnesota. Discoveries and treatments for brain conditions, a MnDRIVE core area of research and partnership, addresses complex and debilitating brain-related disorders by leveraging university and state investments in medicine and engineering and extending our vibrant partnerships with medical device industries in Minnesota. Criteria for Selection: Fellowship recipients will be selected based on academic record, clinical record (for residents/clinical fellows), relevance of the proposed research to neuromodulation, evidence of past and future research productivity, alignment of the training experience with the goals of the MnDRIVE initiative, and project quality. Applicants working on projects with industry partners and/or commercial potential are especially encouraged to apply.
Graduate Fellowships: We seek outstanding doctoral students with strong undergraduate and graduate school records whose thesis research is focused on neuromodulation.
Postdoctoral Fellowships: We seek outstanding postdoctoral trainees who are planning on or already working with University of Minnesota faculty mentors on neuromodulation research at the University of Minnesota.
Residents/Clinical Fellowships: To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants should have an MD or MD/PhD, be a resident or fellow in a Board of Regents approved residency or clinical fellowship program at the University of Minnesota, and have a current license to practice medicine in Minnesota or a Minnesota Board of Medicine Residency permit by the award period.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
There are three parts to the application, all must be completed no later than 5:00 p.m. CST on January 19, 2018.
Part 1. Online fellowship application. Applicant should complete the online fellowship application form no later than 5:00 p.m. CST on January 19, 2018. The application calls for the following required information:
- Applicant name and contact information (telephone, email, current and permanent address).
- Applicant academic training history (schools attended, dates of attendance, degrees earned/post-doc experience, majors and GPA).
- Applicant CV (in PDF format) that includes previous education, honors/awards, research experience, publications, conference abstract titles, and IP (e.g., disclosures/patents) (upload file, limit = 2 pages).
- University of Minnesota faculty mentor contact information (this is the faculty mentor under whose direction the applicant will work should the applicant receive a fellowship) (name, phone, email, position, department).
- Names and contact information of two individuals who will write LETTERS OF SUPPORT on behalf of the applicant.
- PROJECT TITLE (limit = 200 characters with spaces)
- STATEMENT of PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE (limit = 300 characters with spaces). Please provide a general statement of the PROJECT'S SIGNIFICANCE - 1 to 2 sentences (limit = 300 characters with spaces) in language appropriate for the general public, for example: Dr. Smith's patient-centered research will lead to improved treatment for the critical motor symptoms of Parkinson's Disease.
- STATEMENT of the potential of the fellowship experience to contribute to the health and quality of life of the citizens of Minnesota and/or the economic vitality of the state - 1 to 3 sentences (limit 500 characters with spaces). Use language that is appropriate for the general public.
- TRAINING EXPERIENCE NARRATIVE (upload file, limit = 1 page, no smaller than 11 pt font)
For GRADUATE STUDENT (DOCTORAL) APPLICANTS: Upload a TRAINING EXPERIENCE NARRATIVE (in MSWORD or PDF format) that includes a succinct description of your research project, tells how your research will advance the field of neuromodulation, tells how it aligns with MnDRIVE goals, and explains how obtaining this fellowship will benefit your career aspirations. For projects needing IACUC or IRB approval, please indicate the status of your project with respect to obtaining the approvals. Applicants who are MnDRIVE fellows applying for a second year of funding should also include a summary of the progress to date on their MnDRIVE supported training experience (Limit = 1 page, no smaller than 11 pt font).
For POSTDOCTORAL APPLICANTS: Upload a TRAINING EXPERIENCE NARRATIVE (in MSWORD or PDF format) that includes a succinct description of your research project, tells how your research will advance the field of neuromodulation, how it aligns with MnDRIVE goals, and explains how obtaining this fellowship will benefit your career aspirations. For projects needing IACUC or IRB approval, please indicate the status of your project with respect to obtaining the approvals. Applicants who are MnDRIVE fellows applying for a second year of funding should also include a summary of the progress to date on their MnDRIVE supported training experience (limit = 1 page, no smaller than 11 pt font).
For RESIDENT/CLINICAL FELLOW FELLOWSHIP APPLICANTS: Upload a TRAINING EXPERIENCE NARRATIVE (in MSWORD or PDF format) that includes succinct descriptions of both your clinical training plan and research project. Also indicate how the proposed training experience will advance the field of neuromodulation, how it aligns with the MnDRIVE goals, and how obtaining this fellowship will benefit your career aspirations. For projects needing IACUC or IRB approval, please indicate the status of your project with respect to obtaining the approvals The proposed training experience should include significant research and clinical components (though the relative weighting of each component may depend on the professional goals and aspirations of the applicant). Applicants who are MnDRIVE fellows applying for a second year of funding should also include a summary of the progress to date on their MnDRIVE supported training experience. (limit = 1 page, no smaller than 11 pt font).
- OPTIONAL SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION for TRAINING EXPERIENCE In addition to the required text information of timeline, key milestones and deliverables, the applicant may also submit the following OPTIONAL information: 1) One image containing up to two graphs or diagrams to support the TRAINING EXPERIENCE NARRATIVE (upload file) and/or 2) One page of bibliographic references (upload file).
- TIMELINE with KEY MILESTONES and DELIVERABLE(S): Upload a TRAINING EXPERIENCE TIMELINE with KEY MILESTONES in the award period, and, in 1 or 2 sentences, clearly state the TRAINING EXPERIENCE DELIVERABLE(S) expected at the end of the award period (limit = 1/2 page, no smaller than 11 pt font).
- INDUSTRY PARTNER: If you have an industry partner please identify that partner and briefly describe the partner's role in your project. If there is a path to commercialization associated with your project, please briefly describe the path to commercialization (limit = 300 characters with spaces).
Part 2. LETTERS OF SUPPORT from two professional references. Applicant should arrange for a LETTERS OF SUPPORT to be submitted by each of two references (other than the faculty mentor) who can comment on the applicant’s qualifications and research potential (each letter should be no longer than 2 pages). Letter writers should submit letters by email to [email protected] no later than January 19, 2018.
Part 3. LETTER OF CONFIRMATION from U of MN faculty mentor. The U of M faculty mentor should send a LETTER OF CONFIRMATION that identifies the applicant, states the project title and confirms that he or she will mentor the applicant during the award period should the applicant receive a fellowship (Letter of Confirmation should be no longer than 1/2 page). U of M faculty mentor should submit letter by email to [email protected] no later than January 19, 2018.
