On Thursday, August 7th, community members and advocates gathered at Park Point Beach House in Duluth for the United in Epilepsy Regional Walk, hosted by the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota. The event kicked off at 5 p.m., and by 7:30 p.m., walkers, supporters, families, and local groups had already raised over $6,000—with 119 supporters joining the cause. MnDRIVE Brain Conditions provided a sponsorship to support the great work of this program.
This family-friendly walk united participants in raising awareness of epilepsy, building community, and supporting individuals affected by seizures. Teams honored loved ones, shared inspiring stories, and stood in solidarity with those living with epilepsy.
MnDRIVE Brain Conditions at the Event
Representatives Jeanie Pebbles and Karrie Molitor from MnDRIVE Brain Conditions program, the University of Minnesota’s leading hub for brain research, joined the walk to stand with the Duluth community and showcase their dedication to epilepsy research and rural outreach. Their presence reflected three key commitments:
Connecting With Rural Families
MnDRIVE’s team engaged attendees one-on-one, offering tailored discussions for families in far-northern Minnesota. They provided insights into living with epilepsy in rural settings and how MN-based research and clinical opportunities can directly benefit them.
Sharing Clinical-Trial Opportunities
Through informative materials and conversations, MnDRIVE highlighted active and upcoming clinical trials through the Department of Neurology. Rural attendees learned how they might contribute to cutting-edge studies—offering both access and hope.
Providing Resource Pathways
Attendees received resource sheets outlining:
University of Minnesota epilepsy research programs and trial eligibility
New seizure neuromodulation and epilepsy research studies
Connections to care coordination and support via the Epilepsy Foundation
These tools were designed to empower rural families in navigating both treatment and research avenues.
Why This Matters
Bridging Rural Access Gaps
Epilepsy often requires specialized care typically centered in metro areas. MnDRIVE’s outreach helps demystify research involvement for those living hundreds of miles from major medical centers.
Supporting Participant Diversity
Including rural voices is crucial for ensuring epilepsy research reflects the full spectrum of experiences and outcomes.
Empowering Through Knowledge
Sharing clinical trial info builds awareness and agency—helping individuals understand their options and access new therapies.
Community Impact
Raised $6,226 from 119 supporters
Served as a hub for fun, connection, and solidarity—through stories, entertainment, and shared meals on Duluth’s beautiful lakeside.
Provided a platform for MnDRIVE Brain Conditions to amplify awareness of epilepsy research and clinical trial participation within rural communities.
Looking Ahead
MnDRIVE Brain Conditions is committed to maintaining this momentum—participating in future walks (Twin Cities on September 14, Rochester August 14, and St. Cloud August 12) continuing to expand access, and fostering meaningful partnerships in rural MN.
