Dr. Hiba Sheheitli is our third MnDRIVE Early Career Research Skills Development Awardee for Faculty in Medicine and Science. Dr. Sheheitli is an experienced nonlinear dynamicist and theoretical neuroscientist, with a focus on the use of dynamical systems modeling for understanding the emergence and interactions of multiscale neuronal oscillations in the brain. In her ongoing work at the Neuromodulation Research Center and the Udall Center of Excellence in Parkinson's Disease Research, she studies the dynamics of the basal ganglia thalamocortical network and its disruption in Parkinson’s disease (PD). She strives to develop mechanistic mathematical models that will serve to advance our understanding of PD pathophysiology and provide theoretical foundations for more effective neuromodulation treatment. This MnDrive award will allow her to further acquire, and combine, hands-on in-vivo electrophysiology skills and advanced computational techniques, for the development of novel model-based deep brain stimulation strategies for PD patients.
