Closed-loop neuromodulation system upgrade in the Non-invasive Neuromodulation Laboratories

Research

The University of Minnesota’s Office of the Vice President for Research has announced the Research Infrastructure Investment Program: 2021 Awards. The program awards funding to projects supporting transdisciplinary research and collaboration across the University’s colleges and campuses. More than $1.7 million was awarded to 10 research projects, reaching 10 departments, units, and centers, four colleges, and two campuses. Supporting colleges or centers provide one-to-one matching funds for each award. Including matching funds, more than $3.4 million in total funds were awarded this year.

Awards will support research infrastructure, facilities, and support services over a variety of University research areas, including support for replacing and upgrading a laser scanning microscope in the Duluth Imaging Center, upgrading critical equipment in the Non-Invasive Neuromodulation Laboratories, and the development of a new Collaborative Research Studio to catalyze research at the nexus of art, technology, and science.

Congratulations, to our MnDRIVE Non-invasive Neuromodulation Laboratory (NNL) Scientist and Lab Manager, Mo Chen, Ph.D. who received a $40,000 award and $40,000 matching funds to upgrade lab equipment such as an electroencephalography (EEG) data acquisition solution (a 64-channel active electrode amplifier with a high sampling rate of up to 20 kHz, a fast data streaming device, and a close-loop trigger generating device) for closed-loop EEG-guided brain excitability assessment and a real-time target machine to process EEG signal for closed-loop neuromodulation intervention.
