1. What is your favorite part about neuromodulation work?
My favorite part about neuromodulation work is the unique opportunity to "communicate" to the brain using novel techniques in order to either better understand the brain or restore it's function.
2. What is your favorite kind of neuromodulation technique and/or equipment and why?
My favorite neuromodulation technique will certainly be deep brain stimulation. I still remember the first time I saw a Parkinson's patient's video when the patient's deep brain stimulation was turned on. It was like a magical button that got pressed and the patient's symptoms were immediately "wiped out".
3. What kind of conditions do you treat with neuromodulation?
Parkinson's disease and Essential tremor.
4. Any sparks of inspiration you would like to share?
If a tiny amount of electrical stimulation in the brain can change a person's life, our "little" contributions in science can also be impactful.
5. What is your favorite part of the brain and why?
My favorite part of the brain is the subthalamic nucleus which is a really small region but with dense neurons. Modulating this small brain region will give you the chance to indirectly modulate the whole neural network.
6. Any exciting news or breakthroughs you'd like to share regarding your neuromodulation work?
One exciting news I would love to share is that through a pilot clinical trial we have finally had the chance to test a novel coordinated reset deep brain stimulation approach in patients with Essential Tremor. It was a significant milestone to see our first patient going home with this novel treatment.
