MnDRIVE Brain Conditions is proud to welcome Dr. Rosana Esteller as our newest Neuromodulation Scholar, who joined the University of Minnesota at the end of August 2025. Dr. Esteller is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and a trailblazer in the field of neurotechnology.
Dr. Esteller is widely recognized as one of the key architects of the world’s first closed-loop, brain-implantable neuromodulation device for epilepsy—a groundbreaking technology now commercially available and powered by the biomarker detection algorithms she developed. As co-founder of IntelliMedix Inc., which later merged with NeuroPace, she played a pivotal role in device development and clinical studies that ultimately secured FDA pre-market approval for this transformative therapy.
Her academic journey began with an M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering from Simón Bolívar University, followed by a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. In 2016, she joined Boston Scientific, where she rose through leadership roles to become Associate Director and Scientific Fellow in R&D. Over nearly a decade there, she spearheaded major innovations in neuromodulation therapies.
With more than 27 years of experience in the medical device industry, Dr. Esteller has led transformative programs from concept to market, authored over 100 patents, and contributed to the field through numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and conference presentations. She has also successfully secured major research funding, including a recent $7.2 million NIH award as Boston Scientific Principal Investigator.
Now leading the Esteller Lab at the University of Minnesota, her work integrates sensing, biomarker discovery, modeling, closed-loop control, and rapid prototyping to develop intelligent neurotechnologies. Her mission is to restore and enhance physiological and cognitive functions, advancing ideas from proof-of-concept through clinical translation with the goal of achieving real-world impact and adoption.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Rosana Esteller to MnDRIVE Brain Conditions and the University of Minnesota community!
