MnDRIVE Brain Conditions researchers at the University of Minnesota Medical School have made significant strides in enhancing spinal cord stimulation (SCS) therapy for chronic pain management. In the Herman-Darrow lab's recent study they revealed that minor adjustments in stimulation polarity and amplitude can substantially influence neural responses, highlighting the potential for personalized SCS treatments. Their findings were recently published in the Journal of Neural Engineering.
Dr. Seth König, the study's corresponding author and a staff scientist in the Herman-Darrow Lab, emphasized the importance of individualized therapy: "We found that even small changes in stimulation polarity and amplitude can dramatically shift whether we get reliable neural responses. Personalizing these parameters could lead to more effective pain relief."
The research also suggests the feasibility of developing implanted devices capable of real-time adjustments based on a patient's neural feedback. Such advancements could not only enhance pain relief but also extend device battery life and broaden the application of SCS to conditions like paralysis.
Future investigations aim to test these adaptive algorithms in long-term studies utilizing fully implanted, closed-loop devices. This research was funded by Abbott Neuromodulation.
